Nissan Cube: Square Plus Spoiler Equals Downforce or A Mess?

Nissan Cube: Square Plus Spoiler Equals Downforce or A Mess?

December 15th, 2009 Sometimes we must digress when writing about cars, especially when we see things out on the road that not only require a double take, but also make us question the laws of physics. When I was growing up my father used to have a saying, Spoilers spoil the look of the car. Now in the 80s this was somewhat true, but it is hard to make a box look good with a wing. That point is a perfect segue to what I saw this morning on my drive into the office: A Nissan Cube with a Spoiler. Now, I know we automotive types can be overly critical, but a spoiler on a Cube? Really? The Cube is such an interesting piece of design all by itself that is seem unfortunate to put a spoiler on the top and I, for one, cant imagine it has much function unless you are trying to accomplish high-speed maneuvers down the twisties of Laguna Seca. If you dont know much about the Cube, it is a Honda Element or Scion xB type of boxy vehicle, except Nissan took a left turn at hard edges and went for the sensual curves of a Jacuzzi instead. From the ripples in the headliner and the speakers to the curves of the dash, the 2009 Nissan Cube has that relaxing vibe. The Cube is meant to be a people carrier and as such is gotten decent reviews. Think of the 2009 Nissan Cube as a stylized entry-level wagon. It starts at $13,990 and can squeeze out 30 mpg on the highway. However, the spoiler may just be too much. It seems to clash with the picture window styled side windows and relaxing mojo that Nissan has infused. Leave the spoiler to the 2009 Nissan Maxima, which truly looks naked with out it. The 2009 Nissan Cube is to laidback and cool to need frivolous additions. Be sure to check out the full review of the 2009 Nissan Cube over at TheCarConnection.com and AllSmallCars.com.

  1. Jonathan--
Your Dad was right - about the only car that ever needed a spoiler to improve it's handling for the moderate highway speeds we drive on public roads was the 1st Gen Audi TT. I remember spoilers going on the back ends of big stationwagons, but they were for keeping the rear windows clear of dust and grime.
About the most new ridiculous car to get a spoiler is the 2010 Mercury Milan: You can no longer spec one with a sunroof and NOT have a spoiler - Even the Mustang GT has a "Spoiler Delete" option!
